Athens and the Greek Islands
June 17: Transatlantic overnight flight from USA.
June 18: We arrive in Athens, and begin our journey with an orientation tour of Athens.
June 19: Our adventure begins this morning as we visit Acropolis, walk to Plaka (the oldest part of Athens, under the Acropolis) for lunch and time to relax, before our late afternoon visit to the National Archeological Museum
June 20: We begin our day with the ferry from Athens to the island of Naxos. Visit the Naxos Castle and enjoy the spectacular sunset from the temple of Apollo (Portara).
June 21: Mass at the Catholic Cathedral, visit the castle of Chora and Cycladic Museum. We take the afternoon to explore Saint George beach.
June 22: On the island of Naxos, we visit to the village of Sagri (Temple of Demetra), village of Halki, Maragas beach. Lunch at Manolis Tavern - local cuisine tasting, and time to enjoy the beautiful azure waters.
June 23: We venture further in Naxos and visit to the village of Moni (visit to olive oil factory, textiles and weaving workshops, visit to the school of the village, cooking workshop and lunch at Irene’s tavern.) We step back to the 6th Century as we visit the Byzantine Church of Panagia Drosani. As the afternoon winds down, we relax as we discover Saint Prokopios beach.
June 24: Day trip to visit to the islands of Delos and Mykonos.
June 25: Sailing trip to southern beaches of the island of Naxos.
June 26, Day trip to Delphi and Galaxidi: Delphi was an important ancient Greek religious sanctuary sacred to the god Apollo. Located on Mt. Parnassus near the Gulf of Corinth, the sanctuary was home to the famous oracle of Apollo which gave cryptic predictions and guidance to both city-states and individuals. Galaxidi for many years was accessible only via boat, until the 1960s, Even today, Galaxidi’s Island-like nature has been maintained. Downhill paths lead to the sea, bougainvillea plants provide color to the alleys, and the wonderful promenade is popular for strolling.
June 27, Return to the city of Athens, via ferry. Attend Athens Festival performance at the ancient Odeon Herodes Atticus.
June 28: We head to the Athens Airport for our return to the USA.
