| Day 6, We venture further in Naxos and visit the village of Moni (visit to olive oil factory, textiles and weaving workshops, a local winery, and a cooking workshop and lunch at Irene’s tavern.)We step back to the 6th Century as we visit the Byzantine Church of Panagia Drosani. As the afternoon winds down, we relax as we discover Saint Prokopios beach.
Day 7, Day trip to the islands of Delos and Mykonos. First, the tiny uninhabited island of Delos, a World Heritage Site and one of Greece’s most important historical sites. According to Greek mythology, Delos was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and became an important port and religious center in 1400 BC. Statues, sanctuaries and temples were built, and their ruins (many unearthed in 1873) are now scattered around the island and on display in a museum. The more lively Mykonos is one of the more touristic Greek Islands, with amazing beaches, beautiful nature, picturesque villages
Day 8, Private yacht sailing to the Southern Naxos beaches. A highlight is Rina Cave, located by an unspoiled beach with exotic green waters, in the Kalandos area, on the island’s southern coast. The cave, which lies to the right side of the beach, features some bird nests while a spring offering fresh water lies to the left-hand side of the cave. (A leisurely morning, before we set sail in the afternoon.)
Day 9, Return to the city of Athens, via ferry. Attend Athens Festival performance at the ancient Odeon Herodes Atticus.
Day 10, Day trip to Delphi and Galaxidi: Delphi was an important ancient Greek religious sanctuary sacred to the god Apollo. Located on Mt. Parnassus near the Gulf of Corinth, the sanctuary was home to the famous oracle of Apollo which gave cryptic predictions and guidance to both city-states and individuals. Galaxidi for many years was accessible only via boat, until the 1960s, Even today, Galaxidi’s Island-like nature has been maintained. Downhill paths lead to the sea, bougainvillea plants provide color to the alleys, and the wonderful promenade is popular for strolling.
Day 11, Constitution Square – Changing of the Guard, with the afternoon at leisure, perhaps last minute shopping? Farewell dinner at Kalokerinos, one of the oldest and most traditional Greek tavernas, situated in the heart of Plaka.
Day 12, We depart for the Athens airport for our transatlantic travels home with memories to last a lifetime.
